Stephen Safe is a Distinguished Professor of Toxicology, Department of Veterinary Physiology and Pharmacology at Texas A&M University. Safe has conducted major research into the anti-estrogenic effects of manmade chemicals. He has been a leading critic of the endocrine disruption hypothesis espoused by Theo Colborn and others.

Dr. Safe's research is focused on the molecular biology of cancer cell growth and development of new mechanism-based anticancer drugs, with emphasis in the areas of molecular biology of endocrine disruption chemicals, mechanisms of toxicity, breast cancer including mechanisms and therapeutics, pancreatic, prostate, colon, and bladder cancer including mechanisms of growth and effects of PPARyagonists.

Dr. Weiqin Chen studied the role of dyslipidemia on diabetic retinopathy, a microvascular complication in diabetic patients with Dr. Julia Busik at Michigan State University and received her PhD degree in Molecular Genetics in 2005. Subsequently, she worked as a Postdoctoral associate for five years with Dr. Lawrence Chan at Baylor College of Medicine, where she was promoted as an instructor in 2010. At BCM, she established two animal models based on genes that are associated with non-alchoholic fatty liver disease (NALFD) and human congenital generalized lipodystrophy (CGL) and characterized their functions in energy metabolism. In 2012, she was recruited as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physiology at Georgia Regents University. The focus of her current research is to dissect the mechanisms underlying adipose tissue dysfunction and development of obesity and lipodystrophy using both in vivo and in vitro strategies.

Adipose tissue is an important endocrine organ that plays a key role in the development of obesity and various metabolic disorders. White adipocytes store excess energy in the form of triglycerides for future need. By contrast, brown and beige (browning-in-white) adipocytes metabolize lipid and glucose to produce heat in a process known as nonshivering thermogenesis, which is crucial in systemic energy homeostasis and thermoregulation. Functional brown and beige adipose tissues are highly correlated with body mass index in adult humans and is either reduced or absent in obese and aged individuals and rodents. The long-term research interest in the lab is to understand the regulation of white, beige and brown adipose tissue development and energy homeostasis, and use it to develop potential therapeutic approaches for obesity and related metabolic diseases.

Jose Mario is the Deputy Editor for Diabetes at the Community Forum of healthcare professionals in British Medical Journal. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at Universidade Federal Fluminense, and a Senior Staff Physician in the Intensive Care Unit-Adults at Hospital Federal da Lagoa, all in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He also has been a principal investigator, and has published clinical studies & Letters to Editors about the mechanisms of cardiovascular diseases associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus in peer reviewed journals like British Medical Journal, Hypertension, New England Journal of Medcine, and American Journal of Hypertension. He was also a post-doctoral Clinical & Research Fellow in the Endocrinology-Diabetes and Hypertension Division of the Brigham & Women´s Hospital at Harvard Medical School where he did many angiotensin II infusions in humans, normotensive, hypertensive, and diabetic individuals. When at Harvard Medical School, he also became certified in the Principles of Epidemiology by the Harvard School of Public Health. He expect for the newer future better prevention and treatment strategies for macrovascular and microvascular diabetic complications, based on more rational and effective strategies. In the University, he is proud of running a busy Hypertension and type 2 diabetes clinic. At British Medical Journal, he enjoy the freedom and internationality of opinions. And also expect a brighter debate about all the clinical future research pathways and controversies surrounding diabetes mellitus.

He has a special interest in type 2 Diabetes, Preventive Cardiology, Hypertension, the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and Cardiovascular Diseases associated with Chronic Kidney Diseases.

Dr. Alessandro Antonelli (Associate Professor, MD) has completed his degree in Medicine, cum laude, in 1982, Specialization in Endocrinology in 1985, Specialization in Occupational Health in 1987, and Specialization in Oncology in 1992, at the University of Pisa, Pisa, Italy. He is now working as Associate Professor in the Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine at the University of Pisa. His researches have been published in more than 280 articles on International journals (Impact Factor > 920, H-I=54). He serves as an Editorial Board Member and is Referee and Reviewer of many scientific international journals.

The research interest of Mandal is Sugar diabetes is the most common cause of kidney failure in the USA and world wide. This strong association between diabetes and kidney failure has inspired Dr Mandal to develop the frame work of Mandal Diabetes Research foundation to assist diabetic patients to live a good life with medical treatment, and not go to dialysis.

Dr. Adel Elnaggar is a medical endocrinologist with an extended expertise in adult diabetes and obesity; as regard prevention and early detection/diagnosis and management and risk reduction of their outcomes. He also share diabetes & obesity clinical trials link and research work concerning both. He is also leadership in community planning against chronic diseases/disabilities affecting community productivity; prevention & management. He is experienced in thyroid diseases and females endocrine health problems.

Deya’s research focuses on gene expression and function in the uterus and its relationship to fertility and cancer. Her clinical interests are Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, unexplained infertility and gynaecological cancers (endometrial, ovarian and cervical cancer). She has strategic collaborations with clinicians at Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University NHS health board, developing cellular and molecular approaches to determine mechanisms underlying gynaecological pathologies, to identify biomarkers. Her projects on endometrial implantation and differentiation, relate to L-selectin ligands (MUC1), hormone nuclear receptors and WT1 pathway. Her research in gynaecological cancer includes the regulation of tamoxifen target genes in endometrium and new methods to identify biomarkers for pre-disposition of infertile women to develop gynaecological cancers. She leads an international research network (Prof. Rojas, Catholic University of Maule and Dr. Gracia, Director of Maule Clinic, Chile), studying protein glycation in relation to altered endometrial function. Her aim is to translate basic research into clinically relevant observations for patient benefit. Her projects involve collaboration with the private sector to expedite validation of clinical diagnostic biomarkers and the development of new drug leads for targeted cancer therapy. She also has multidisciplinary collaborations in the area of nanosensors and improved performance medications in the field of human reproductive biology and hormone therapy. She has received research grant valuing over £1m in the recent years. Deya has published more than 20 articles during her career on human, animal, plant and yeast research. She is a member of the Endocrine Society and acts as an expert reviewer for Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, Human Reproduction and others. She teaches within the Genetics & Biochemistry (College of Medicine) and Biomedical Engineering (College of Engineering) undergraduate programmes.

Gerald C. Hsu received an honorable Ph.D. in mathematics and majored in engineering at MIT. He attended different universities over 17 years and studied seven academic disciplines. He has spent 20,000 hours in T2D research. First, he studied six metabolic diseases and food nutrition during 2010-2013, then conducted research during 2014-2018. His approach is math-physics and quantitative medicine based on mathematics, physics, engineering modeling, signal processing, computer science, big data analytics, statistics, machine learning, and AI.
